What is The Sounds She Collected?

Thank you for finding your way here. Come on in.

I’m Sarah Brooks. I write deeply observational letters to help expand perspectives and process the emotions of daily life.

I am an empath, a kismet believer, and an open-minded writer. Most notably, I have a deep-rooted relationship with music. In short, I grew up with big band singers for grandparents, wrote for Consequence of Sound and Performer Magazine, embraced a household name as “playlist maker,” and swayed through 300+ concerts to go on to interview artists like Iron & Wine to Soccer Mommy. This is how I tapped into music as a doorway for communication and connection.

I believe a collection of songs (the playlist) can encourage beyond-the-surface conversations allowing us to process deep emotions and changes. And that’s exactly what this newsletter holds for you.

On Sundays…

I send a piece of original writing accompanied by a curated playlist to offer a space to help you go through whatever times you find yourself in. Be it a healing balm, friendliness in a time of loneliness, connection in disconnection, big celebration, or to find words you can’t express.

Every letter starts as a simple seed of an idea. With sowing, shine, and a little bit of space, each seed blossoms into its own and makes its way to you. We’ll touch on heavy feelings based on current events, emotional health, social justice, and more, all with a side of joy found in movies, TV, and books.

You’ll find a self-curated playlist at the end, inspired by that letter’s mood. I aim to introduce you to a new song or artist and leave you with contemplation, levity, and inspiration. And a comfort in knowing that maybe you, I and all of us will be listening at the same time, never alone.

The deal is, this is a reciprocal letter that can only exist because you exist (cue my belief in ubuntu). When you subscribe, I keep writing. It’s all connected.

This newsletter is your welcome into a hive mind for empathetic, hopeful people, with lots of music.

Welcome. Thank you for listening.
